Pink Sardine was inspired by a trip to Trader Joe's and a lengthy obsession with canned fish that lasted a few months.
I was heavily inspired by Japanese ink art and woodcuts parallel to this and decided to combine the two passions to give birth to this sardine can concept. Talk about real-world experience.
I chose the name 'Pink Sardine' after drawing a sardine on my ipad that I originally intended to mimic Japanese ink wash and failing at it, so I colored it pink...and liked it.
I correlated the fabricated flavor with my drawing, it being pink and the flavor being pink Himalayan sea salt to make it THAT MUCH more believable.
The typeface was inspired by other common sardine can brands. Using ink wash photos, I created the backgrounds for the packaging experience and made them pink because I felt they fit the sound of the illustrations/design harmony I was aiming for.
The added touch of my attempt at the Japanese Hanko at the tail of the sardine simply reads as Pink Sardine (well, it's supposed to anyhow)
